So I got some news late last night - it would seem that Justin Masterson will be starting the season in Portland. Now obviously someone finally realized that in order to keep things safe they had to separate him from Jed Lowrie. Either way, I eagerly look forward to their inevitable reunion in Pawtucket later this season. Keeping them together is crucial - after all, Justin needs to be able to wink at Jed before he takes the mound. Hurry up there, Justin!
I am convinced that when they are back together in Pawtucket, they'll blast this song here and belt the lyrics out in the clubhouse whilst doing the cheesy dance moves that go along with it. But that's just me.
Also, since Brandon Moss was optioned back down yesterday, one or two things on him have popped up out there, as well. From this blog, which is where I get a lot of my random Minor League news: They called Moss 'Sunbeam' because he tried to put a peanut butter sandwich in the toaster. True story.
That obviously goes along with the button-down shirt story. Brandon would do that, wouldn't he?
(And if you really care, here's a picture of Brandon in the Dominican Republic wearing a stupid hat. It's awesome. I kind of want his hat.)
In other news, my dinner party compilation thing is going reasonably well - just one more day, and every farm system should be accounted for! Only a few kids weren't asked the dinner party question, either, so it's working out. And nobody has outdorked Jed yet. One or two have come very, very close, but nobody can top a dinner party of frozen Ted Williams, Julius Caesar and the Dalai Lama. I'm just waiting on the kid they talk to from Oakland, but for now we'll just assume that Jed is one of the biggest nerds in the Minors and leave it at that. (And that's why I love him, because I'm a big nerd, too.) But I'm planning to do an epic post with everyone's answers, complete with an image of each prospect so we can all get to know them better (outside of the Sox prospects, I'm much less familiar with the kids, although I do know who they are and whatnot). And I might even make it into a poll, with opinion questions about the answers the prospects have given MiLB.com (things like 'which answer was the funniest?' and the like).
I am so desperate to raise prospect awareness that I go to the most disturbing lengths to get people to notice their farm systems sometimes. It's really a bit odd, isn't it?
MAJOR EDIT: On MiLB.com they've got these things called 'player journals,' in which they get Minor Leaguers to quasi-blog about their experiences. I was digging through the archives, and guess who they had write one in 2006?
I'll pull choice quotes out later. For now, let me just go and spaz over this.
MAJOR EDIT 2: I have found a choice quote.
Who clipped your hair and why is it a mohawk? -- John, Wilmington
The mohawk is a good story. Jacoby Ellsbury and I had a wager about the outcome of the Stanford-Oregon State game in the College World Series. Obviously, I was on the losing end of that bet and that is why I am sporting a mohawk. I have to wear it until Oregon State is eliminated from the World Series or they win the whole thing. It was all in fun, and I have even seen a few kids in Wilmington with mohawks at the games.
Oregon State would go on to win the CWS that year, by the way. They also won in 2007.

Woohoo! Prospect awareness for the win.
And I expect Masterson will follow roughly the same path as Buchholz did last year... that is, start at Portland, get to Pawtucket, and then get called up in August/September. I hope he's in Pawtucket by May 26--that's Memorial Day, and I have tickets to see the AAA Yankees play the PawSox that day!
Ooh, a trip to McCoy? I'm planning on getting up there sometime this year (my primary motive being Jed, of course - I even went so far as to order a 'Lowrie 12' shirt the other day in preparation for whenever he gets called up again - but also just to see the prospects in general). I'd love to land tickets for the All-Star Futures game, too, if possible (and it might be, actually).
(You should get a Livejournal - I think you'd really like this community.)
I'm so excited to get to McCoy. I've wanted to go for a long time but finally have an excuse to go--that game is a Yankee game (sort of), it's a day game on Memorial Day so I can actually get there without getting back around 1 AM, and it's a week before my birthday! The Futures game would be awesome, too...
And wish granted :) I've been meaning to get one for a while, actually...
I'm planning a big epic McCoy trip this summer (which will involve me dragging my friends up to Rhode Island) because I wasn't able to land any Major League Sox tickets this year - and prospects are a bit of an obsession here (well, with me, at least). I happen to live really close to New York City when I'm not at school, so the Futures game is a possibility - and I think it'd be easier to get tickets for it. (Even if it means going into Yankee Stadium - I guess I should do that before it closes, even though I've been trying to avoid going there for years.)
Yay! (goes and friends you)
That sounds awesome! And I have a friend who's a huge Yankees fan (the nice kind) who managed to get tickets to all three games of the Sox' last regular-season tickets at Yankee Stadium ever. She invited me down to see them with her. It is going to be absolutely EPIC. We're going to squee over Joba Chamberlain and Jacoby Ellsbury (who we both love to death) and boo Grady Sizemore (who we both dislike), even though he won't be there. Like I say, epic!
(Lowrie icon FTW.)
Grady just...irritates me. He's annoyingly good at the plate. (And on top of that, he went and robbed Coco of a Gold Glove, too!)
I'm not sure how your friend landed those tickets, but that's amazing - that'll be a fantastic series to witness in person, and you'll be there for the whole thing! It's astounding.
(...and I'll just go back to staring at that icon now. Yeah.)
The friend actually got those tickets in a weird way--her parents have been trying for years and years to get season tickets at Yankee Stadium, and they finally got them THIS year. They sold the majority of them already, but kept about 15 or 20 games... including the three-game Sox series! It will be absolutely amazing.
(My parents and kid brother are Mets fans, so I'm expecting to spend a lot of time at Shea this summer...)
That's awesome. I've never been to a major league ballpark other than Fenway... I'm looking forward to getting to this Yankee Stadium before it closes, at least.
My family is trying to get to all of them. We actually plan our vacations around when the teams will be home. (When I was doing a college search down around D.C., the Mets were playing the Nationals and the Sox were playing the Orioles, so we got two games in. It was a weird coincidence, but it was awesome.)
That's awesome. I'd love to get to Wrigley and Camden in particular...
Camden Yards is a wonderful place to catch a ballgame. I've been there a few times (it's somewhat close to my college). The atmosphere there is fantastic...
(I've never done Wrigley, but I plan to at some point. Pure old-school baseball with the organ...yes.)
Sunbeam. Omg. <3
I'm going to start calling Brandon Sunbeam now, too. It's classic.
I was not shocked at all when I read about Brandon and the toaster. He'd just do that.
And now I actually have a legitimate reason to make Brandon do the Peanut Butter Jelly Time song! YES!
I am so drawing him as the dancing banana now.
Brandon would be co-chef with Papi(you know after teh ceremony he'll help Papi in the kitchen with his signature PB sammiches)
Though I'm still giggling thinking about teh written vows :P
On July 18th we need to do a mega-post concerning the wedding. It'll be so epic.
Oh, and Brandon made a cameo at the Trop, apparently. (They seriously bring this guy in an inflatable banana suit out during the seventh inning stretch and have him dance to the song! It's well-documented on YouTube...)
(I hope the fangirls realize this is a giant satire.)
Javy just seems like he'd be good at that. Maybe we can get him on Project Runway, too, after this! And we do need to spread the image of Jonathan as a flower girl. It needs to be plastered all over the internet.
(I'm going to look into landing tickets for the AAA All Star game. I'm hoping a certain prospect or two makes it...)
Seriously, I REALLY hope the fangirls understand the satire of this. We're MOCKING them and having fun at the same time.
I might run out and buy a notebook at the college bookstore to keep track of everything we're doing here. Or something to that effect, at least. We need to put our fashion designs somewhere!
(In other news, I am watching UCLA win and it is making me sad.)
I'll have to word some of this up just to doublecheck on everything. :)
If Starship did come up, like the time they did when I searched for Oregon State on Amazon, I probably would have suffocated.
I'm printing the two threads right now. They took up 14 pages of a Word document - in size 8 font Times New Roman. They are a testament to all the hard work and thought we are putting into this special day.
Justin HAS to marry them. He'll know the procedure and will therefore be able to handle the thing without any problems.
And whether he's in the wedding party or not, George Kottaras needs to wear a dress so he can look pretty. It's the hair.
I don't think Clay and Jacoby would even have a clue(unless if Papelbon gets drunk around them...which hopefully will not happen)
Though a DJ would be good idea to try to figure out(You dont' want the same 3 guys doing the like 1000 jobs)
Oh, yes, parentage! We did have Josh walking Clay down the aisle before, but we need a "mother" for Jacoby...I'm wondering who else would work here. Mike and Alex are someone else's parents, so they're out...we definitely need a veteran for this. (idly wonders if J.D. would agree to it...)
True - we need someone with good musical taste for that. I wonder if that so-called "fansite" the Herald linked to has a list of what's on players' iPods...?
Also for Music, I could find some good ish(I swear my taste in music is better than Starship! Not much better, but defnitely better)
Edited at 2008-03-28 05:08 am (UTC)
About half of the stuff on my iPod is classical music (which I genuinely enjoy! Serious!), so I'm not sure how useful I'd be...
Josh would probably just sort of bodyguard the entire place in case anybody gets a little too grabby with the bride or groom.
I think "Sweet Caroline" must be played at one point ditto with "Okajima Okie Dokie" and "Dirty Water" however "Never Gonna Give You Up" is gonna be the Wedding Party song :P Because Masterson will perform it with all of them in red wigs. Maybe "Dirty Water" can be the last dance kind of song.
There may have to be a karaoke period(though I always envisioned Youk owning a karaoke machine so this can be done) in the middle of the wedding.
Josh would be good at that. He really would. (He needs to wear sunglasses, too. Now watch it rain.)
If Jed and Justin are in authority, Rick Astley is mandatory. They'll see to it that the entire MLB is Rick Rolled by the end of the day. After all, it's their job. (They can add more Rick with this, but I imagine this to be their Happy Magical Pawtucket Reunion Song instead.)
...I have all of those songs on my iPod. I will probably end up making a wedding playlist.
Karaoke = EPIC WIN. Until Jonathan ends up with the mic. Then it gets scary.
(The next time I see him I swear I'm going to give him a hard time about his boston.com diary. For the milb one he managed to get himself hurt; this year he didn't even manage to post past February...)
I know! I was so annoyed that he and Justin didn't update that thing more often. I love the way he writes, too - he uses big words and semicolons, like he's still writing essays for school and whatnot. I'm a little mad at him for that, although the entry on his collision with David Mailman was hysterical...
...and I have to say it: I love Jed's hair like that. It looks like it's fun to play with...!
Is Rick Astley week or something? That guy has been everywhere in my life in one way or another the past few days.
(I'm guessing you were better at it than he is, though, because it says he "tried.")
Rick Astley is part of a long-running joke on this blog that involves Justin Masterson. It's a very, very long story, but he pops up quite often here as a result.
...Why am I not surprised that you used that picture, though?
I made a Clay one recently, too:
Also, I kind of love that Utsumi fellow. He's good. He seriously impressed me.
(...saves the Jed picture to her computer) I just noticed that he switches his batting gloves for each at-bat. That's so cute!
